One of the most vital items for a referee when timing a soccer match is having an operational and accurate referee watch. Soccer referee watches are vital because they allow the referee to keep an eye on the game from a time perspective, ensuring that the game does not run over or under time.

A referee is not usually provided with a sports watch in his or her official referee kit; these kits usually only come with a jersey, shorts and a handbook on the Laws of the Game.
