Becoming An AYSO Referee – Great Way To Start Your Refereeing Career!

The American Youth Soccer Organization is an official national body that operates to develop and promote soccer as a fun and healthy activity for young people.  The American Youth Soccer Organization operates under five official philosophies in line with its charter. In addition it offers a stringent set of AYSO Referee Tips to help official AYSO appointed referees to run fair, fun, safe, and challenging games for young people of all ages.

Because the AYSO offers programs across every state in the country, they are always looking for local volunteers to undertake their soccer referee training program. Being a referee for the AYSO is actually very challenging but also very rewarding. Initially candidates must complete the basic instructor requirements.

This starts of with a one hour child protection training certification and leads right into 6 and 7 hour certifications on how to manage soccer matches using the FIFA laws and AYSO Rules and Regulations. As your knowledge and experience of the game increases, AYSO offers a host of additional certifications for official referees who want to expand their role and become an Advanced Referee or even a local referee instructor.

The AYSO dedicates and entire component of its website to official referees. In this section official referees can find a whole host of advice and information to help them deliver fun, fair and challenging soccer games for people in their area.  As an example, official referees can tap into information resources such as the Official Referee Update, the Official Referee Laws of the Game Handbook, the Official Referees Guide to Keeping Game Control and the AYSO Guidance Handbook for Official Referees. In addition, the site also offers other information recourses such as A Guidebook to Running The Shorted Sided Game for Official Referees and other official forms such as Official Referee roster templates and an Official Referee Observation Form.

AYSO offers tremendous learning opportunities, resources, and pointers for anyone who wants to become a referee. Refereeing can be a fun, rewarding experience, especially if you have a passion for the game. Whether you just want to spend some time refereeing occasional soccer games or have aspirations to be a National Referee, AYSO is a great, fun place to start.
