Great Soccer Goalkeepers – The Best Of The Best
Many soccer enthusiasts will say that most of the great soccer goalkeepers have gone now and that the game has changed. Week after week we see goalkeepers making errors and sports fans in the stands scream as they see their favorite team go down to the opposition on the scoreboard.
So what has happened to all the great goalkeepers? Why are there so many high profile mistakes these days and why are the great goalkeepers we have now so very rare? When we think of the legendary goalies like Peter Schmeichel, Walter Zenga, Oliver Kahn, and Gianluigi Buffon, we think of nothing but superior soccer goalkeeper skills and great saves.
So Who Are They – The Dane And His Italian Peers
Known as The Great Dane, Schmeichel made his name as a world-class goalkeeper with Manchester United. He was internationally capped for Denmark 128 times, he won Euro 92 and reached the World Cup quarter-finals in 1998. The Dane’s shot-stopping skills helped Manchester United become the dominant force in English football in the 1990s.
Walter Zenga is an Italian soccer player, and long-time goalkeeper for the Italian national team and Inter Milan. After being the backup goalie at the 1986 World Cup, Zenga became the goalkeeper proper in 1990, and he then led the team to third-place. He ended up with 58 caps for Italy.
When he is playing at his best, Oliver Kahn is one of the best goalkeepers in the world. His remarkable goalie oriented agility first came to light in the 2001 Champions League final when his saves from the spot helped Bayern Munich beat Valencia.
Gianluigi Buffon transferred from Parma AC to Juventus FC in July 2001 when they paid more than $53m for him. Buffon helped his club to a league title in his first season, conceding only 23 goals in 34 league games. In 2003, Buffon became the first goalkeeper to win the Most Valuable Player award at the UEFA European Football Awards.
These are just of the great goalkeepers of our time.
