Bending The Soccer Ball – Perfect Practice Makes Perfect!

Just as David Beckham does week after week, you too can learn how to bend the ball to achieve a miracle goal. A ball that is kicked from a dead stop can move in one direction, and then bend or spin in another direction, or you might want to retain possession and keep the ball away from your opponents. Bending the soccer ball can be your key to victory on the sports field. So how can you do these soccer ball kicks?

The phenomenon in bending balls is all due to the way air flows over the spin of the ball. Researchers have unraveled the mysteries of bending soccer balls during a kick. Using wind-tunnel experiments and high-speed camera analysis, they found that Beckham accelerated the ball to 80 miles per hour, after hitting it about 8cm to the right of its center with the instep of his right foot.

Want to Bend – Here’s How

Bend the ball in both directions like Beckham and inflict this on your opposition. Do you want to know how? Then here are some easy steps to follow:-

1. Position your standing foot a comfortable distance from the ball as you approach at an angle.
2. Start by practicing this skill for a dead ball situation such as a free-kick from a corner.
3. Once you have mastered dead ball then master the curling of a shot or pass from open play when you are on the move.
4. To curve the ball from right to left use the inside of your foot, striking the bottom half of the right side of the ball.
5. Or if you want to curve the ball from left to right with your right foot, use the outside of your foot.
6. Aim to make contact with the bottom half of the left side of the ball.
7. In both cases your follow through will not be in the direction of the target as you are cutting across the back of the ball rather than kicking through the centre of it.
8. Grab a ball, head to the sports field and practice, practice, practice.

There are many excellent soccer books available from which you can learn this handy skill!
